MCWM Flag Conservation Program
“Rally Around the Flag”
One of the newest Civil War artifacts the MCWM has received is a 35 star U.S. flag. To have the honor of obtaining this remarkable flag for our facility before it is even open is something very special.
The MCWM has initiated the “Rally Around the Flag” campaign to preserve and display this flag. This flag is very fragile and are in need of special care to prepare it for display. This flag also needs a specially fabricated exhibit case in order to be made accessible to the public and be displayed in the museum.

35 star US Flag
It is said that the most cherished and significant items on the battlefields of the Civil War were the flags that the fighting units carried. There are hundreds of accounts in which soldiers of both sides lost their lives in the capture or protection of these sacred cloths of honor. Whether the flags were made from simple strands of cotton or wool and sewed by one of the local ladies, or they were professionally manufactured from the finest silk available by companies such as Tiffany or Horstmann, they were all cherished by the soldiers who rallied around them and carried them off to war.
Although the soldiers all knew that the men who carried these flags into battle would become the primary targets of their foe, they all rushed for the opportunity to carry these banners and lead the charge.
In fact, carrying the flags of their units was considered by many to be the most honorable duty they could have bestowed upon them. And although they know that they were most likely sentencing themselves to death by carrying these flags, there was never a shortage of soldiers who wanted the honor of bearing them.
More soldiers received the Medal of Honor for actions regarding the flags than for any other heroic deed on the battlefield. Their flags were the most sacred and cherished item a unit had and the soldiers would kill others in their defense and risk their own lives in capturing them.
Please help save this incredible and iconic piece of Civil War history. Your donation will help conserve this flag and design special a exhibit case so this incredible artifact will be accessible to the public.
